Choose a handbag by checking three things: the items you carry, the bag's width, height and depth, and how its strap sits on you. A bag can look roomy in a photo and still be too small for your phone or daily essentials.
Start with what you carry
Lay out your phone with its case, wallet, keys and any other items you need each day. Include bulky items such as a glasses case or makeup pouch. Measure the largest items before comparing bags.
- For a few small essentials, compare compact crossbody bags.

- For a laptop or tablet, check the device measurements and ask for a fit check. A tote shape alone does not confirm that a device will fit.
Read width, height and depth together
Width is the distance across the bag. Height is the distance from its base to the top of its body. Depth tells you how much space the bag has from front to back.
Two bags can have the same width but hold different amounts. A deeper bag may offer more room for bulky items. Pockets, lining, the opening and the shape of the base also affect the space inside.
Listed bag measurements are usually external measurements. They do not guarantee usable inner space or phone fit. Leave room to reach your items and close the bag without forcing the zip or flap.

Strap length and strap drop are different
Strap length measures the strap itself from one end to the other. Strap drop measures the distance from the top of the bag to the highest point of the strap when held up. You cannot compare the two numbers as if they mean the same thing.
Movea has a listed strap length of 48 inches. Safira has a listed strap drop of 14 inches. These are different measurements. Your height, clothing and how you wear the bag also affect where it rests.
Before buying a crossbody bag, check whether its strap adjusts and whether a listed length is the full length or a setting. Ask for help if a measurement is unclear.
Check the opening and closure
A wide bag can still have a narrow opening. Check how you will put your phone or wallet inside. Look at the zip, flap and pocket layout, as well as the body size. For example, Velare has a zip on the main compartment plus a double magnetic flap closure.
